Hilo International Airport Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighting Facility

The new Hilo International Airport Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Facility (ARFF) is a $12 million project.  The 12,000 square foot facility includes a training and command center, sleeping units that accommodate 12 firefighters, five vehicle bays, a watch room, and support facilities.  With KYA Design Group, Mechanical Engineers of Hawaii (MEH) was responsible for providing all mechanical and fire protection system designs to accommodate the specialized needs of this facility.

MEH’s services included:  HVAC, plumbing, a 3,000-gallon diesel storage tank for an emergency generator, fuel dispensing facilities, compressed air, and fire protection services including an automatic wet pipe fire sprinkler system and ARFF foam fire extinguishing system. The ARFF is key to extinguishing jet fuel fires. An ARFF storage area also was required to include emergency eyewash, a shower, and a refill area.

Apparatus bays with industrial compressed air systems were necessary for vehicle maintenance.

The building is designed to meet LEED® Silver requirements using insulated metal panel systems and day lighting as major design elements.
